Megalops atlanticus Valenciennes, 1847, pez nativo del océano Atlántico, también conocido comúnmente como sábalo o tarpón, ha sido documentado por primera vez en la región del Pacífico Oriental Tropical, específicamente en Perú. Se estima que, hace aproximadamente 80 años, esta especie migró desde el Atlántico al Pacífico a través del Canal de Panamá, adaptándose y ampliando su distribución hacia el norte y el sur en la zona tropical del Pacífico oriental (donde actualmente se encuentra distribuido desde Guatemala hasta el sur de Colombia). En este estudio, se reporta un espécimen de 129 cm de longitud y 18 kg de peso, capturado por un pescador artesanal mediante el uso de red en la localidad de Bonanza, Tumbes, al norte de Perú (3°42’44,47”S - 80°44’35,51”O). Este hallazgo representa el primer registro de Megalops atlanticus en Perú, extendiendo su distribución conocida en el Pacífico oriental más de 500 km hacia el sur.
ABSTRACT: The tarpon Megalops atlanticus Valenciennes, 1847, a native fish of the Atlantic Ocean, is recorded for the first time in the Southeast Pacific region (Peru). It is presumed that about 80 years ago this species crossed from the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Panama Canal, adapting and expanding its distribution to the north and south in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (currently distributed from Guatemala to southern Colombia). A specimen measuring 129 cm in length and 18 kg in weight was recorded, caught by an artisanal fisherman with his net, in the locality of Bonanza, Tumbes, in northern Peru (3°42’44.47”S - 80°44’35.51”W). This is the first record of Megalops atlanticus in Peru extending >500 km to the south its distribution range in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
